Overview
Partial (uni-compartmental) knee replacement replaces only the damaged section of the knee, leaving healthy bone, cartilage and ligaments in place. It is typically suitable for patients whose arthritis is confined to one compartment of the joint, rather than affecting the whole knee, and can offer a more natural-feeling result for the right candidate, with a smaller incision than total knee replacement.
What the procedure involves
The operation typically takes 45 to 90 minutes under general or spinal anaesthetic. Mr Hansom resurfaces the affected compartment through a smaller incision than total knee replacement, preserving the surrounding healthy bone, cartilage and ligaments wherever clinically possible, using enhanced-recovery techniques.

Your recovery
Many patients mobilise quickly and are often able to go home within one to two nights. Recovery is generally faster than total knee replacement, with many returning to driving at around 4 weeks and resuming normal activities within six to twelve weeks, guided by a structured rehabilitation plan and regular physiotherapy.
