Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before your consultation.

General

How do I know if I need a hip or knee replacement?

If joint pain limits daily activities, disturbs sleep, or no longer responds to physiotherapy and medication, it may be time to consider surgery. Mr Hansom reviews symptoms and imaging and discusses every option, surgical and non-surgical, before any decision is made together.

A GP referral is not required by Mr Hansom for private consultations, although your health insurance provider may require one if you are claiming through them. You are still welcome to bring a referral along with any relevant letters or imaging. Self-referral is straightforward — simply contact the clinic to arrange your first appointment at a convenient time.

Yes. Mr Hansom personally sees every patient at each and every consultation, from your initial assessment through to surgery and follow-up care, ensuring continuity of care throughout your treatment, rather than being passed between different members of a wider clinical team.

Before your surgery

How should I prepare for surgery?

Mr Hansom and his team will provide detailed pre-operative guidance tailored to your procedure, covering medication, fasting, and what to bring into hospital. Staying active, eating well and stopping smoking beforehand can all help support a smoother recovery.

Yes, most patients attend a pre-operative assessment before surgery, which typically includes a review of your general health, any medications, and relevant tests. This helps ensure you’re properly prepared and reduces the risk of complications on the day.

Recovery

Will I be in a lot of pain afterwards?

Some discomfort after hip or knee surgery is expected and is typically managed with pain relief as part of a structured recovery plan. Most patients find pain reduces steadily over the first few weeks, though individual recovery varies.

Recovery timescales vary depending on the procedure and each patient’s general health. Many patients resume light activities within weeks, while a full return to driving or work is usually agreed individually as part of the guided rehabilitation programme.

You can generally fly 6 weeks after surgery, following clearance from your doctor.

Costs & insurance

Are you covered by my insurer?

Many private medical insurance policies cover consultations and surgery with Mr Hansom, though cover varies by provider and policy. Patients are advised to check directly with their insurer beforehand, and the clinic team can help with any paperwork required.

Yes, Mr Hansom welcomes both self-pay and insured patients at his clinics. The clinic team can provide a clear breakdown of costs before you proceed with treatment, so you know exactly what to expect, with no hidden fees along the way.
