Overview

ACL reconstruction rebuilds a torn anterior cruciate ligament using a tendon graft, restoring stability to the knee. It is commonly recommended for active patients, or those experiencing giving way or instability of the knee following a sports or ligament injury, particularly where a return to pivoting sports or high-demand activity is a goal. Mr Hansom assesses each knee individually before advising on suitability.

What the procedure involves

The operation is typically performed arthroscopically and takes 60 to 90 minutes under general anaesthetic. Mr Hansom reconstructs the ligament using a tendon graft, secured with fixation devices, restoring stability to allow a structured, staged return towards sport and higher-demand activity over time.

Your recovery

Most patients go home the same day, using crutches short-term while early healing takes place. Approximately 50% of cases also involve a meniscal tear requiring a knee brace. A structured rehabilitation programme supports a gradual return to sport, typically over 6 to 9 months, with progress guided by functional testing and regular physiotherapy review throughout.
