Overview
Meniscus surgery addresses tears to the knee’s cartilage cushion, which can cause pain, swelling or a catching sensation during movement. Depending on the tear pattern, Mr Hansom may repair or trim the damaged tissue to relieve symptoms and protect the joint from further wear over time, aiming to preserve as much healthy meniscal tissue as possible during this typically day-case keyhole procedure.
What the procedure involves
The operation is typically performed arthroscopically as a day case, under general or spinal anaesthetic, and takes around 30 to 45 minutes. Mr Hansom assesses the tear pattern directly and repairs or trims the affected tissue accordingly, preserving as much healthy meniscus as possible.

Your recovery
Most patients go home the same day and can walk with minimal support soon after surgery. Recovery is often quicker than for ligament reconstruction, with many returning to driving within one to two weeks and normal activity resuming over the following weeks, guided by a structured rehabilitation plan.
Please note that a knee brace may be required if the meniscus is repaired/fixed during surgery.
