Overview
Total knee replacement resurfaces the entire knee joint, replacing both the worn thigh and shin bone surfaces with an artificial implant. It is generally considered when arthritis affects the whole joint and non-surgical treatment no longer provides adequate relief for pain, stiffness or reduced mobility, and it remains one of the most effective and widely performed orthopaedic operations available.
What the procedure involves
The operation typically takes one to two hours under general or spinal anaesthetic. Mr Hansom removes the damaged cartilage and bone across the joint and fits a precisely-sized implant, using enhanced-recovery techniques designed to support faster mobilisation and a smoother recovery after surgery.
- Full resurfacing of the knee joint for advanced arthritis
- Modern, long-lasting implant materials built for durability
- Enhanced-recovery pathways to support faster healing
- Mobilising with a physiotherapist within a day of surgery
Your recovery
Most patients are walking with support the same or next day and home within one to three nights. With a structured rehabilitation plan, many return to driving at around 6 weeks and enjoy lasting relief from arthritis pain within a few months of surgery, supported by regular physiotherapy throughout recovery.
