FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need a hip or knee replacement?

If joint pain limits daily activities, disturbs sleep, or no longer responds to physiotherapy and medication, it may be time to consider surgery. Mr Hansom reviews symptoms and imaging and discusses every option, surgical and non-surgical, before any decision is made together.

Some discomfort after hip or knee surgery is expected and is typically managed with pain relief as part of a structured recovery plan. Most patients find pain reduces steadily over the first few weeks, though individual recovery varies and is discussed beforehand.

Recovery timescales vary depending on the procedure performed and each patient’s general health and fitness. Many patients resume light activities within a few weeks, while a full return to driving or work is usually agreed individually as part of the guided rehabilitation programme.

Not every case of hip or knee pain requires surgery. Options such as physiotherapy, activity modification, weight management and injection therapy may be considered first, with surgical treatment only discussed if non-surgical pain management has not provided sufficient, lasting relief.

Mr Hansom specialises in hip and knee replacement, including partial, total and robotic-assisted knee replacement techniques, alongside ACL reconstruction, meniscus surgery and knee arthroscopy, treating degenerative joint conditions and sports-related knee and ligament injuries for patients across Stirling and the surrounding area.
